Susanna Gregory is the author of numerous medieval murder mysteries, Restoration whodunits, and other historical crime fiction. She also writes under the pseudonym of Simon Beaufort and as part of the Medieval Murderers. Gregory packs (and I mean packs) a ton of historical facts in her plot-rich stories. Most of her characters are taken directly from the historical record including Samuel Pepys’ autobiographies. Chaloner is initially given the task of uncovering the thief at Gorges House, a women’s home for the insane and a beneficiary of the Earl’s charitable giving. Susanna Gregory is back with her latest historical mystery featuring Thomas Chaloner. Hannah is dead, struck down by the plague (this is not a spoiler Gregory tells us this in the opening Prologue) and Tom finds himself a widower again with plenty of free time after the Battle of Lowestoft.
